Vimshottari Dasha is Vedic astrology's primary timing system based on the Moon's Nakshatra at birth. The 27 Nakshatras are ruled by 9 planets, and your birth Nakshatra's ruling planet becomes your starting Maha Dasha. The remaining balance is computed from the Moon's exact longitude within that Nakshatra. The full cycle spans 120 years.

Maha Dasha is the major planetary period (6–20 years). Each Maha Dasha is divided into 9 Bhukti (Antardasha) sub-periods, which are further divided into Pratyantar (sub-sub) periods. For example, during Saturn Maha Dasha (19 years), you'll experience Saturn-Saturn Bhukti, Saturn-Mercury Bhukti, and so on — each Bhukti blends both planets' effects.

The starting point of your Dasha sequence depends on the Moon's exact position within its Nakshatra at birth. Even a few minutes difference can shift the Dasha balance and change when your first Maha Dasha ends and the next begins. This cascading effect means all subsequent Dasha transitions could be off by months or years if birth time is inaccurate.

No Maha Dasha is universally good or bad — it depends on the planet's placement, lordship, and dignity in your specific birth chart. Jupiter and Venus Dashas are generally considered favourable, while Saturn and Rahu Dashas are seen as challenging. However, a well-placed Saturn can give excellent results, and a weak Jupiter may not deliver its promise. Context is everything.
