What is Tithi?
Tithi is the angular distance between the Moon and Sun, measured in multiples of 12°. There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month — 15 in Shukla Paksha (waxing) and 15 in Krishna Paksha (waning). Each Tithi has specific spiritual and astrological significance.
Five Panchang Elements
Panchang means "five limbs" — Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (Sun-Moon combination), and Karana (half-tithi). Together they determine the auspiciousness of any moment.
Shukla & Krishna Paksha
Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) spans from Amavasya to Purnima as the Moon waxes. Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) spans from Purnima to Amavasya as the Moon wanes. Many festivals and vratas are observed on specific Tithis of each Paksha.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the 5 elements of Panchang? ▼
Panchang (meaning "five limbs") consists of: (1) Tithi — lunar day based on Moon-Sun angular distance, (2) Nakshatra — the Moon's star mansion, (3) Yoga — a combined Sun-Moon calculation (27 types), (4) Karana — half of a Tithi (11 types), and (5) Vara — the weekday. Together, they form the complete Vedic almanac used for timing all religious and auspicious activities.
Why does Panchang differ by location? ▼
Tithi, Nakshatra, and other Panchang elements change at specific moments determined by the Moon and Sun's positions. While these astronomical events happen simultaneously worldwide, the local time they occur differs by timezone. Additionally, sunrise-based calculations (used for daily Panchang) vary by location — sunrise in Mumbai differs from Delhi by several minutes, affecting which Tithi applies on a given day.
What is the difference between Shukla and Krishna Paksha? ▼
Shukla Paksha is the bright fortnight — the 15 days from New Moon (Amavasya) to Full Moon (Purnima) when the Moon waxes. Krishna Paksha is the dark fortnight — from Full Moon to New Moon when the Moon wanes. Each Paksha has 15 Tithis (Pratipada through Purnima/Amavasya). Most auspicious activities are preferred during Shukla Paksha.
How do I use Panchang to find auspicious dates? ▼
Look for days with favourable combinations: Shukla Paksha Tithi (2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 11, 13, or Purnima), benefic Nakshatras (Rohini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Revati), and good Yoga (avoid Vishkumbha, Atiganda, Shoola, Vaidhriti). Avoid Rikta Tithi (4, 9, 14), Bhadra Karana, and inauspicious Nakshatras. For precise Muhurtha, use our dedicated Muhurtha Finder.
