Vanakkam JyotishVidya family!

I wanted to open a discussion on a topic that’s crucial for many of us: Vivaha Poruttham (Marriage Compatibility). While the traditional Dasa Poruttham (10 Poruttham) system is widely used in Tamil Jyotish, I often wonder if we place too much emphasis on just these ten points. Don't get me wrong, Dinam, Ganam, Mahendram, and Yoni Poruttham are vital, but sometimes a perfect match on paper might not translate to a harmonious life if the deeper astrological factors are overlooked.

Beyond the Kuta matching, how many of you delve deeply into the individual Janma Jathagam of both prospective bride and groom? I feel it's essential to analyze the strength of the Kalathra Sthanam (7th house), the Lord of the 7th house, and the placements of natural significators like Sukran (Venus) for men and Guru (Jupiter) for women. The state of the Lagnam and Lagnathipathi (Lord of Ascendant) for both is also paramount for overall well-being and longevity of the relationship.

Another significant aspect is the dreaded Sevvai Dosham (Mangal Dosha). How do we approach its cancellation rules? Is it sufficient to just find another chart with Sevvai Dosham, or do we need to check the exact placement, aspects, and strength of Sevvai (Mars) in both charts? I've seen cases where a minor Sevvai Dosham was overemphasized, leading to unnecessary rejections, while sometimes a more severe one was overlooked due to other favourable Poruttham scores.

I'm particularly interested in hearing how you incorporate Gochara (planetary transits), especially of Sani and Guru, when assessing long-term compatibility. Do you also look into the potential Dasha-Bukthi periods both individuals might experience concurrently during their marital life? For instance, if one person is going through an Ashtama Sani period while the other is in a particularly challenging Kethu Dasha, how might this impact the initial years of their marriage? Let’s share insights to help decode this complex yet beautiful aspect of Jyotisham.

Vanakkam! This is a fantastic discussion point. I completely agree that relying solely on Dasa Poruttham can be misleading. While Dinam and Ganam are foundational, the deeper analysis of the Janma Jathagam is paramount. Specifically, for Vivaham, the Kalathra Sthanam (7th house) and its Lord, along with the Kalathra Karakas – Sukran for men and Guru for women – hold immense weight. Their strength, dignities, and aspects are more indicative of marital harmony and longevity than a simple 8/10 Poruttham score.

For instance, if the 7th Lord is debilitated or placed in a Trikona (6, 8, 12) house, or afflicted by malefic planets like Sani or Rahu, even with good Poruttham, marital life can be challenging. Conversely, an exalted Sukran in a man's chart or a strong Guru in a woman's chart can mitigate many minor Poruttham deficiencies. We must also check the Navamsa chart thoroughly, as it's the chart specifically for marriage and partnerships.

I totally resonate with the Sevvai Dosham point! In my own life, my sister's match faced immense scrutiny due to her Sevvai in the 2nd house (from Lagnam). The prospective groom's family was very hesitant, even though his chart also had a strong Sevvai in the 4th house, which should have been considered a cancellation by strength and placement. Our Jyotishi eventually convinced them by detailing the exact planetary aspects and the strength of Sevvai in both charts, showing that the 'dosham' was actually balanced.

It highlights how important it is not just to see 'Sevvai Dosham is present' but to analyze its intensity, house, Rasi, aspects from benefic planets like Guru, and any potential cancellations. A strong Guru's aspect on Sevvai can tremendously reduce the malefic impact, for example. It's truly an area where oversimplification leads to missed opportunities.

This is really insightful! I'm quite new to delving deep into Jyotisham. When you talk about going beyond Kuta matching, could you give an example of what kind of 'deeper astrological factors' we should prioritize? Like, if Dinam and Ganam Poruttham are good, but the 7th house has a debilitated Lord, which one should carry more weight? How do you balance these conflicting indications?

Also, how exactly do we check the strength of the Lagnam and Lagnathipathi? Is it about their placement in good houses, being exalted, or receiving benefic aspects? Sorry if these are basic questions, but I'm trying to learn the practical application.

While I appreciate the detailed analysis, I've seen many cases where a simple, high Poruttham score (especially good Dinam, Ganam, and Yoni) led to very harmonious marriages, even if the individual charts had some challenges. Perhaps the traditional Dasa Poruttham system, while seemingly superficial, has an inherent wisdom that accounts for overall compatibility at a fundamental level. Sometimes over-analyzing every planetary placement can lead to unnecessary fear and rejection.

Of course, looking at Sevvai Dosham seriously is important, but for general compatibility, the basic Poruttham points often serve as a good initial filter. Maybe the energy of the Nakshatras matching well creates a baseline understanding and acceptance that allows couples to navigate other planetary challenges.

For anyone facing challenges in Vivaha Poruttham or experiencing delays/issues in marriage, I always recommend visiting the Sri Kalyana Pasupatheeswarar Temple in Karur. It's believed to bless those seeking suitable alliances and remove obstacles. Another powerful parigaram is performing regular Archana to Goddess Parvathi in any nearby Shiva-Shakti temple, especially on Fridays. Chanting the 'Om Kleem Krishnaya Govindaya Gopijana Vallabhaya Swaha' mantra daily 108 times is also very effective for attracting a compatible partner and fostering marital bliss.

These spiritual remedies, combined with a proper astrological reading that looks beyond just Kuta matching, can truly make a difference. Sometimes, the divine grace invoked through these parigarams helps in mitigating the effects of challenging planetary placements, like a weak Sukran or an afflicted 7th house.

Great analysis! I've had the same experience where a perfect Poruttham score didn't guarantee happiness, and vice versa. It's indeed crucial to look deeper into the individual Janma Jathagam.

Regarding Sevvai Dosham, the discussion needs more nuance. It's not just about 'Sevvai in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house.' We must consider the Rasi Sevvai is placed in. For instance, if Sevvai is in Mesham or Vrichigam (its own houses), or Makaram (exalted), the dosham effect is significantly reduced or even nullified. An aspect from a powerful Guru on Sevvai also cancels a major portion of the dosham. Furthermore, if Sevvai is in the 7th house of a Meena Lagnam chart, its maleficence is very different from Sevvai in the 7th house of a Rishaba Lagnam chart, due to its sign lordships.

The cancellation also depends on whether the partner has Sevvai Dosham of similar strength and placement, or if other planets like Sani or Rahu are also in similar houses, creating a 'Sani-Dosham' or 'Rahu-Dosham' that balances the Sevvai Dosham. It's a complex interplay, and a superficial check can lead to grave errors in judgment. Many good alliances are needlessly rejected because of a lack of deeper understanding.

My own marriage is an example of strong Lagnam and Lagnathipathi saving the day. Our Poruttham score wasn't exceptional, and my husband had a mild Sevvai Dosham in the 4th house. However, both our Lagnams were strong – my Vrischika Lagnam had an exalted Chandra and aspect from Guru, and his Simha Lagnam had its Lord Surya in the 10th house, aspecting the Lagnam. Our Jyotishi emphasized that the strength of our core being, represented by the Lagnam, would help us overcome any initial hurdles.

And it's true. We've faced challenges, but our individual resilience and mutual respect, which I believe stem from strong Lagnas, have helped us build a strong Vivaham. It definitely showed me that the foundation of the individual chart is as important, if not more, than just the compatibility points.

I'm a beginner here. Could someone explain what 'Lagnathipathi' means and why its strength is so important for the overall well-being of the relationship? Is it just about the Ascendant Lord, or does it also involve the planet that rules the Lagna Rasi? How do we assess its strength?

While I agree that a deeper dive is beneficial, we shouldn't dismiss the wisdom of the Dasa Poruttham system entirely. For generations, it has served as a reliable initial screening tool, especially for general compatibility. Dinam Poruttham ensures longevity, Ganam Poruttham indicates mental compatibility, and Yoni Poruttham helps with physical and emotional intimacy. These foundational elements, derived from the Nakshatras, are crucial for a smooth marital journey.

Perhaps the issue isn't with the Poruttham system itself, but with how it's sometimes applied superficially. A good Poruttham score provides a stable ground, upon which the deeper planetary analysis can build. It's not either-or, but a combination. The Kuta matching is the first layer, and the Janma Jathagam analysis is the second, more intricate layer.

Another vital aspect often overlooked is the impact of Gochara (planetary transits) and the ongoing Dasha-Bukthi periods of both individuals at the time of marriage and throughout their married life. A potentially challenging period, like Sani Dasha for one partner or Rahu Dasha for the other, can significantly influence the initial years of Vivaham, regardless of a good Poruttham. For example, Sani's transit over the 7th house or 7th Lord can bring delays or difficulties.

It's beneficial to analyze if any major challenges are indicated by the current Dasha-Bukthi periods or Gochara. If so, performing appropriate parigarams for those specific planets (e.g., Sani Shanthi Homam during Sani Dasha) can help in mitigating potential issues and ensuring a smoother transition into married life. This foresight is part of a truly holistic astrological assessment.

I've often wondered the same thing about whether we rely too much on just the Kuta matching. Your points about the Kalathra Sthanam and its Lord are very valid!

The importance of the Navamsa chart cannot be stressed enough when it comes to Vivaha Poruttham. While the Rasi chart shows the overall life, the Navamsa chart is specifically for marriage and partnership. A strong 7th house and a well-placed 7th Lord in the Rasi chart might still lead to marital issues if the Navamsa chart shows afflictions to the 7th house, its Lord, or the Karakas (Sukran/Guru).

For instance, if Sukran is debilitated or in a malefic house in the Navamsa chart, or if the Navamsa Lagnam is afflicted by Rahu or Kethu, it can indicate challenges regardless of the Rasi chart's strength. Similarly, the placement of the Darakaraka (the planet with the lowest longitude, excluding Rahu and Kethu) in the Navamsa can give crucial insights into the nature of the spouse and the marital relationship. A comprehensive Jyotishi will always check both Rasi and Navamsa side-by-side.

My personal experience involved a weak Sukran in my chart, placed in the 6th house with Sani. Despite having decent Poruttham with my fiancé, our Jyotishi specifically pointed out the potential for disagreements and health issues related to the spouse due to this placement. Initially, I dismissed it, thinking the Poruttham was enough. True enough, after marriage, we faced constant minor health issues and a lot of communication problems, almost exactly as predicted. It was only after performing parigarams for Sukran and Sani that things gradually improved. It taught me the hard way that individual planetary strengths and weaknesses, especially for Karakas like Sukran and Guru, are extremely vital.

Could someone provide a simple checklist or a step-by-step guide for checking Sevvai Dosham cancellations? Like, if Sevvai is in the 7th house, what specific conditions or planetary aspects should I look for to confirm if it's cancelled or mitigated? Is it always about finding another Sevvai Dosham chart, or can other factors like Guru's aspect be enough on its own?

Vanakkam! This is an excellent discussion point. I completely agree that relying solely on Dasa Poruttham can be misleading. While Kuta matching provides a basic framework, the true essence lies in a thorough Janma Jathagam analysis. We must scrutinize the strength of the Lagnam and Lagnathipathi for both individuals, as this indicates overall vitality and resilience. A debilitated Lagnathipathi, even with high Kuta scores, can signal underlying issues that affect the partnership's longevity.

The Kalathra Sthanam (7th house) and its Lord are paramount. We need to check their dignity, aspects, and conjunctions. Is the 7th Lord Vargottam? Are there any malefic planets like Sani or Rahu afflicting the 7th house or its Lord? Furthermore, the condition of Sukran for men and Guru for women as natural significators of marriage is non-negotiable. A strong Sukran in a benefic house, un-afflicted, promises marital harmony for a male native, while a well-placed Guru for a female native signifies a supportive spouse and family life. Sometimes, even a great Kuta match can face challenges if these fundamental planetary strengths are overlooked.

You've hit the nail on the head regarding Sevvai Dosham! In my experience as a Jyotish consultant, this is one of the most misunderstood and overemphasized doshams. The simplistic view of matching one Sevvai Dosham chart with another often ignores the specific rasi placement of Sevvai and its aspects. For instance, a Sevvai in Mesham or Vrichigam (its own signs) in the 7th can still be strong and less malefic than a debilitated Sevvai in Katagam in the 7th. The cancellation rules are intricate and depend on Guru's aspect, Sukran's strength, or if Sevvai is in its exalted or own sign.

I've seen many prospective alliances unnecessarily broken due to a 'minor' Sevvai Dosham, while some severe ones were glossed over. It's crucial to check if Sevvai is combust, retrograde, or afflicted by Rahu/Kethu. A strong Guru's aspect (Guru Drishti) on Sevvai can significantly mitigate its dosha. We need to move beyond mere presence and understand the dynamic interplay of planets. This nuanced approach helps in providing realistic guidance to families, preventing unnecessary fear or false assurances.

This is a great thread! I'm a beginner in Jyotish, and I often get confused about Sevvai Dosham. So, if a boy has Sevvai in the 7th house in Rishabam, and the girl also has Sevvai in the 7th house but in Vrichigam, would that be considered a proper cancellation? Or do the rasis also need to be similar in nature or have the same strength of Sevvai? And what about the strength of the Lagnathipathi? How do we assess if it's 'strong' or 'weak' beyond just being in its own sign or exaltation?

While I appreciate the call for deeper analysis, I must respectfully state that we shouldn't completely downplay the traditional Dasa Poruttham. Dinam Poruttham ensures longevity and good health for the couple, and Ganam Poruttham speaks to their basic temperament and compatibility. Yoni Poruttham addresses physical compatibility, which is also a practical aspect of Vivaham. These are the foundations upon which a harmonious marriage is built.

Of course, looking at the Janma Jathagam is crucial, but these Kutas aren't just 'on paper' points; they are distillations of profound astrological principles honed over centuries. A strong 7th house won't guarantee happiness if the basic temperament (Ganam) clashes constantly. It's about finding the right balance and not dismissing the traditional wisdom outright. We need both the macro and the micro views for a comprehensive understanding.

For anyone struggling with marital harmony due to perceived astrological challenges, particularly related to Sevvai Dosham or weak Sukran/Guru, I highly recommend visiting the Navagraha Sthalams. Specifically, for Sevvai related issues, a visit to Vaitheeswaran Koil, the Sevvai Sthalam, and performing archana there can bring significant relief. For issues with Sukran, Kanjanoor is the place. Regular chanting of Sukra Gayathri or Guru Gayathri, depending on the affliction, can also strengthen these karaka planets. Sometimes, simple parigarams, done with faith, can mitigate karmic influences.
