Anbana Jyotisha Arivalargale, I wanted to open a thread to discuss the profound and often challenging transits of Sani Bhagavan, specifically Ezharai Sani (Sade Sati) and Ashtama Sani. These periods are widely known for bringing significant life changes, lessons, and sometimes immense difficulties. I believe sharing our personal experiences and observations could be incredibly beneficial.

During my own Ezharai Sani, which covered my Janma Rasi of Rishabam, followed by Mithunam and Kadagam, I faced numerous obstacles in my career and personal health. It felt like a period of immense purification and learning, with unexpected delays and financial strains. I observed how Sani tests one's patience and commitment to duty. What were your experiences during this 7.5-year cycle, especially concerning the Janma Rasi transit?

Similarly, Ashtama Sani, when Sani transits the 8th house from one's Janma Rasi, is also considered a very trying period, often associated with health issues, hidden troubles, or sudden changes. Have any of you, or your clients, gone through this transit? What were the key challenges and lessons learned? Did certain Parigarams or spiritual practices, such as visiting Navagraha temples and offering prayers to Sani Bhagavan, provide significant relief?

I'm particularly interested in understanding the nuances. Does Sani's placement as a benefic or malefic in the natal chart change the intensity of these transits? How do other concurrent Gochara effects, like Guru Peyarchi or Rahu-Kethu transit, interact with Sani's influence during these critical periods? Does the Dasha-Bukthi running at that time amplify or mitigate the effects?

What are the most effective Parigarams (remedies) you've personally found for Sani's challenging transits? Besides fasting on Saturdays and offering 'Ellu Vilakku' (sesame oil lamps), are there specific mantras, charity, or lifestyle adjustments that truly make a difference? Let's compile a resource of practical advice and shared wisdom to help navigate these significant astrological phases.

Building upon the original post, it's vital to consider the concurrent Gochara of Guru Bhagavan during these Sani transits. Guru's benign aspects (5th, 7th, 9th drishti) on Sani or on the houses Sani is transiting, or even on the Janma Rasi, can significantly soften the blow. For instance, if during Ezharai Sani on Rishabam, Guru is transiting Kanni (5th house from Rishabam) or Makaram (9th house), his benefic influence can provide timely help, spiritual guidance, or opportunities for growth even amidst difficulties.

Conversely, if Guru's Gochara is also unfavorable, say Guru is in a Dusthana from the Lagna or Janma Rasi, the period can be doubly challenging. Similarly, the transit of Rahu and Kethu also plays a role. If Rahu is transiting the Lagna or Chandra Rasi during Ezharai Sani, it can amplify confusion, anxieties, and unexpected events, making the Sani transit feel even more turbulent. Jyotisham is all about this complex interplay of planets.

I went through Ashtama Sani when Sani was in Simham for my Mesham Rasi (Sani in the 8th from Chandra Rasi). It was truly one of the most trying periods of my life. My health deteriorated significantly, with chronic digestive issues that doctors struggled to diagnose. There were also sudden financial losses from unexpected sources, almost like hidden troubles manifesting.

The key lesson for me was detachment and understanding the impermanence of material possessions. It forced me to re-evaluate my priorities and focus more on spiritual well-being. Visiting the Sani Bhagavan temple every Saturday and reciting the Hanuman Chalisa daily provided some much-needed mental fortitude. It didn't make the problems disappear, but it gave me the strength to face them.

While Sani's transits are undoubtedly challenging, I respectfully offer an alternative perspective: Sani Bhagavan is not inherently a malefic in the destructive sense for everyone. He is the Karyakaraka, the significator of karma, discipline, and dharma. His periods are often misunderstood as purely negative when in fact, they are periods of intense soul purification and growth, especially for those with a strong sense of righteousness or those who are in tune with their spiritual path.

For some, Sani can be a powerful Yoga Karaka, especially for Rishabam and Thulam Lagnas. Even during Ezharai Sani or Ashtama Sani, while the initial impact might be testing, the ultimate outcome often leads to greater stability, authority, and wisdom gained through experience. It's like a strict but fair teacher who prepares you for greater responsibilities. The lessons learned during Sani's transits are often the most enduring and beneficial in the long run.

To echo the sentiments on parigarams, charity is exceptionally powerful during Sani transits. Specifically, helping the elderly, the disabled, or those in manual labor roles, who are all represented by Sani, can significantly appease the planet. Donating blankets, warm clothes, or food to the needy on Saturdays is a highly recommended practice.

Also, regular chanting of the Sani Moola Mantra (Om Pram Preem Proum Sah Shanaischaraya Namah) or the Dasharatha Sani Stotram with devotion can create a protective shield and help maintain mental peace. Consistency in these practices, rather than a one-time effort, yields the best results. It's about cultivating a disciplined approach, which Sani Bhagavan himself embodies.

During my Ezharai Sani, the transit through my Janma Rasi of Kadagam was particularly tough on my relationships and family life. It felt like constant misunderstandings and emotional distance, which for a Kadagam Rasi native, is extremely distressing. Chandra, being the Rasi lord, became afflicted by Sani's transit, leading to mental anxiety and emotional ups and downs.

I remember feeling isolated and misunderstood. It taught me the importance of clear communication and setting healthy boundaries, even with loved ones. It was a time of internal struggle, but looking back, it made my relationships stronger and more resilient after Sani moved on. The lessons were harsh, but ultimately invaluable.

This is a fantastic discussion! As someone trying to learn more about my own chart, how exactly do I know when my Ezharai Sani or Ashtama Sani periods will start or end? Is it based purely on my Chandra Rasi (Moon sign)? For example, if my Chandra is in Simham Rasi, would my Ezharai Sani start when Sani enters Kadagam Rasi and end after Sani leaves Kanni Rasi? And how do I calculate Ashtama Sani from there?

I'm trying to cross-reference my life events with these transits, but getting the precise timings right is a bit confusing with all the retrogressions. Any simple guidance on how to track this in a Panchangam or using an online tool would be very helpful!

The impact of Sani's transits is highly nuanced, especially when we consider the Nakshatras it passes through. Each Nakshatra is ruled by a different planet, which adds another layer to Sani's general effect. For instance, if Sani during Ezharai Sani is transiting through a Nakshatra ruled by Sevvai (e.g., Mrigasheersham, Chithirai, Avittam), the challenges might manifest with more aggression, accidents, or sudden conflicts, reflecting Sevvai's energy.

Similarly, if Sani transits through a Nakshatra ruled by Budhan (e.g., Ayilyam, Kettai, Revathi), the issues could be related to communication, intelligence, education, or nervous system problems. This specific Nakshatra Gochara modifies the general Rasi transit effect significantly. Astrologers often look at the Nadi Amsa as well, which gives even finer details about the manifestation of karmic patterns during Sani's difficult periods.

I had a very similar experience during my Ezharai Sani on my Janma Rasi. The delays and the feeling of everything being an uphill battle were exactly as described. It's almost as if Sani Bhagavan forces you to slow down and re-evaluate your entire approach to life. Very well articulated!

For those seeking specific remedies during Sani Peyarchi, consider visiting temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, especially those where Shiva is worshipped in his Rudra form. Shiva's energy can alleviate the most challenging effects of Sani. Also, visiting the ancient Navagraha Sani Kshethrams like Sani Singnapur in Maharashtra, or Kujanur and Thirunallar in Tamil Nadu, is highly recommended during Sani Peyarchi times.

Performing Shanti Homas for Sani, either at home or in a temple, can also create a positive vibration. The key is to approach Sani Bhagavan with humility, patience, and a willingness to learn the lessons he presents, rather than fighting against the current. He truly is the planet of justice and karma.

To expand on the original poster's question about Sani's benefic/malefic nature: Sani's role as a Yoga Karaka is paramount. For example, for Rishabam Lagna, Sani rules the 9th (Thirikonam) and 10th (Kendram) houses, making it a powerful Yoga Karaka. Even during its challenging transits like Ezharai Sani (when transiting the 12th, 1st, 2nd from Chandra Rasi) or Ashtama Sani, a Yoga Karaka Sani, though it will still test, often ensures that the native ultimately emerges stronger, more authoritative, and with significant achievements after the transit period.

However, for a Lagna like Kadagam, where Sani rules the 7th and 8th houses, it is generally considered a malefic. Its transits can be more overtly difficult, bringing direct challenges to partnerships, longevity, and unexpected problems. The principle is that Sani's transit effects are always filtered through its natal lordship and its inherent nature for that specific Lagna. A benefic Sani will teach with a firm hand, while a malefic Sani might punish more severely, albeit always for karmic reasons.

Excellent thread, Anbana Jyotisha Arivalare! Your observations on Sani's transit through Janma Rasi during Ezharai Sani are spot on. From an analytical perspective, Sani's role during these difficult transits is heavily influenced by its natal placement and lordship. If Sani is a Yoga Karaka for a specific Lagnam (like for Rishabam, Mithunam, Kanni, Tula, Makaram, Kumbham), its transits, though challenging, often lead to significant growth and lasting positive outcomes after the initial struggles. For example, for a Thula Lagna native, Sani's Ashtama Sani might be more about transforming relationships and inherited matters rather than purely negative health impacts, especially if Sani is well-placed in the natal chart.

The impact of concurrent Gochara effects is indeed crucial. If Sani is in Ashtama Sani, and simultaneously Guru (Jupiter) is in a challenging position or undergoing a difficult Dasha-Bukthi, the intensity of the struggle can escalate. Conversely, a strong Guru Gochara (e.g., aspecting the Janma Rasi or Ashtama Sani house) can mitigate some of Sani's harshness, offering wisdom and guidance. The Nakshatra Sani transits through also holds significance. For instance, if Sani transits a Ketu Nakshatra during Ezharai Sani, it can bring about detachment and spiritual lessons, sometimes through sudden losses.

Regarding Parigarams, while visiting Navagraha temples and offering prayers to Sani Bhagavan (especially at Thirunallar) is highly recommended, chanting the Sani Moola Mantra or Dasharatha Sani Stotram regularly can also provide immense relief. Fasting on Saturdays and offering food to the poor (especially those in Sani-related professions) are very effective. Ultimately, Sani demands discipline, patience, and adherence to duty (Dharma), and embracing these qualities is the best parigaram.

I absolutely resonate with your experience during Ezharai Sani! My own period of Ezharai Sani, which started when Sani entered my Janma Rasi of Simham, was incredibly testing. Prior to that, Sani transiting my Vyaya Sthanam and Dwadasham (12th house) and then Janma Rasi (1st house) brought a feeling of isolation and relentless pressure. I faced major setbacks in my entrepreneurial venture – it felt like every step forward was met with two steps back. Financial strains were constant, and I experienced a significant health scare which forced me to re-evaluate my lifestyle completely.

What I found during this time was that Sani truly makes you introspect and understand your strengths and weaknesses. The period of Sani in Janma Rasi was particularly tough, as it affected my self-identity and confidence. However, looking back, it forced me to streamline my business, cut unnecessary expenses, and focus on fundamental values. It was like a deep cleansing. I observed that during my Guru Dasha, Sani Bukthi within this period, the challenges were more manageable, as Guru's grace seemed to soften Sani's blows, even though the overall Gochara was difficult.

For relief, I made it a point to visit a local Navagraha Sannidhi every Saturday and lit til oil lamps for Sani Bhagavan. More importantly, I practiced selfless service (seva) and tried to maintain a very disciplined routine. These small acts, coupled with patience, definitely helped me navigate the difficult waters. It truly felt like a period of immense purification and learning, just as you described.

This is a much-needed discussion! Thank you for starting it. I'm a bit new to understanding the deeper impacts of Gochara, especially Sani's transits.

My Janma Rasi is Mesham. I've heard that Ezharai Sani for Mesham can be particularly harsh. Can anyone share if Sani's current transit (when it's not directly in Janma Rasi or 8th house) also causes some effects, or is it only during these specific periods that its impact is felt strongly? Also, does the position of Chandra in the natal chart (as the ruler of Manas, the mind) make one more sensitive to Sani's challenges during these transits? I'm trying to understand how to best prepare.

Such an insightful discussion! While many focus on the difficulties of Ezharai Sani and Ashtama Sani, I've observed that Sani's transit, regardless of its position from Chandra Rasi, often acts as a karmic equalizer. For those with a strong Dharma Karaka Guru in their natal chart, even severe Sani Peyarchi periods can turn into periods of spiritual awakening and profound personal transformation, rather than just hardship.

I had a client with Vrishchika Rasi going through Ashtama Sani, and simultaneously experiencing Rahu Dasha, Sani Bukthi. Conventionally, this sounds very challenging. However, because his natal Sani was exalted in Thula Rasi and aspected by a strong Guru, the challenges, though present, manifested as unexpected opportunities to clear old debts (both material and karmic) and gain immense wisdom through suffering. He didn't experience the typical health issues or sudden changes but rather a slow, deliberate shedding of attachments and a deepening of his spiritual practices.

So, I respectfully suggest that while the Gochara of Sani is significant, the natal strength and dignity of Sani itself, along with benefic aspects from Guru or other benefics, plays a huge role in modulating the intensity and ultimate outcome of these transits. Sometimes, a well-placed Sukran or Budhan can also provide some cushion. The traditional parigarams are always good, but a focus on self-reflection and integrity truly empowers one to transcend Sani's lessons.
